Circulo Homes Voice & Tone

Our purpose is to create world-class solutions to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they pursue their passions, achieve their goals, and build lives that they love.

Values

Nothing about us, without us

We partner directly with individuals from the community we support because we know that bringing our skill sets together will result in world-class solutions.

Always Listening & Learning

We approach problem-solving with curiosity and humility, asking questions first, and never assuming we know the answer because we know there is always more to learn.

Respecting individual experiences

We listen more than we talk, deferring to those in the I/DD community as we shape solutions together.

Voice

Circulo Homes's voice is an extension of the groundwork laid by Circulo - our humanity comes through in every word. It is respectful, genuine, and accepting.

Our voice is powered by trust, humility, and compassion, without feeling the slightest bit contrived.

Our voice evokes a feeling of optimism that speaks to our belief that every individual at Circulo Homes will receive the services they need to thrive.

Tone

Our tone will be guided by the information we need to impart and the context in which it will be consumed, always prioritizing a high-quality user experience.

It will generally be simple, friendly, and approachable. It will be serious when necessary, but always easy to understand. It will always stay true to our voice, grounded in the values that help define Circulo.

We are:

  • Friendly, but not fake

  • Compassionate, but not patronizing

  • Optimistic, but not tone-deaf

  • Helpful, but not condescending

  • Resourceful, but not know-it-all

Do’s and Don’ts

We know that trust is hard to build and easy to lose, and the fastest way to lose trust within the I/DD community is to use incorrect language. That’s why we intentionally partner with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities(I/DD) to ensure we’re using language that they would use themselves.

We default to people-first language. A little tip, “When in doubt put the word people or person in front of it”

Ethical Storytelling

Whenever possible, we ask residents of Circulo Homes to be the voice of Circulo Homes.

At Circulo Homes, we seek to honor members of the I/DD community’s experiences and voices through the storytelling process. We are committed to amplifying their unique stories in a way that ensures they are heard, respected, and valued.

We partner with individuals from the start, offering them the opportunity to choose how they want to be represented in their stories. We invite them to consider their own safety, future, and personal preference as they make these decisions, including if they’d like to use their name and photo or pseudonym and illustration.
